Both Turmoil and The Kiss Of Death are brutally metallic - neither will be mistaken for easy listening anytime soon - but while Turmoil (whose early influences included the Cro-Mags, Sick Of It All and Agnostic Front) was strictly aimed at the hardcore/metalcore crowd, The Kiss Of Death is much more mindful of stoner rock, doom metal and sludge metal. With that Gula/Hydro/Frey/Gardner/Dorward lineup in place, The Kiss Of Death made it clear that they were far from a carbon copy of Turmoil. In order to accomplish that, they recruited three more Pennsylvanians: drummer Chris Frey (formerly of the band Dragon Green), guitarist John Gardner (an ex-member of Sever The Fallen) and bassist Jimmy Dorward. But despite Turmoil's popularity, Gula and Hydro felt that it was time to move on - and when they decided to form a new band, the idea was to travel in a different direction musically. Turmoil, which was formed in 1992, enjoyed a very enthusiastic and passionate cult following in the hardcore scene many of their fans will argue that they were among the best hardcore/metalcore bands that the East Coast had to offer in the '90s. Those two former Turmoil members are singer Jon Gula and guitarist Jeff Hydro, both of whom are from eastern Pennsylvania and are highly regarded in hardcore circles.

Our songs are like our children, Phillip.Heavy-metal/Metalcore band from Allentown, Pennsylvania.īio: When two ex-members of the '90s hardcore/metalcore crew Turmoil decided to form a new band in 2001, the result was The Kiss Of Death. And Gene (Simmons) was livid – he was flipping out, and as soon as we came off stage his security guy grabbed me and says 'Gene wants to talk to you right away.' He called me into his dressing room – he’s looking at me through his mirror, doing his make-up - and stated 'This is very bad Phillip, this cannot happen again. But in the context of Girl – I thought that the song would work really well and we didn’t have that many songs at the time, so we thought we’d try it and see how it goes.Ĭut to like a year later - we’ve got dates supporting KISS two shows in London and one up in Birmingham, and as I said we didn’t really have many songs so we put 'Do You Love Me' in our set. KISS were kind of like a pantomime group for me growing up – I never really took them seriously. I didn’t know KISS that well I was more into Deep Purple, Humble Pie and Led Zeppelin. Lewis: "Kim Fowley, who wrote the song tracked me down and said 'You guys have gotta do this song - it’s gonna put you over the top' and I couldn’t help but agree with him. Lewis was recently interviewed on the Australian Rock Show podcast and recalls the incident. Guns frontman Phil Lewis and Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen were both members of Girl, a band who were infamously booted off a UK tour supporting KISS in 1980 for performing "Do You Love Me" during their opening set.

KISS may lay claim to the 1976 song "Do You Love Me" as being their own, yet the tune was originally written by rock Svengali Kim Fowley, who’d also offered it to late '70s UK outfit, Girl.
